Moniker Art Fair 2018: Top 5 To See
With several major art shows in New York City this weekend, how to choose what to see?
Moniker Art Fair, open May 3 - 6 in Greenpoint, stands out for street art fans: all urban art, on-the-day print releases,, all-new artwork, an interactive INSA carousel and an accompanying mural program with The L.I.S.A. Project.
Billed as the biggest urban art fair in the world, Moniker started in Brick Lane, London, and has tripled in size since its first edition in 2010. The show broke records in 2017 with $300,000 worth of art changing hands during the preview alone.
Hear what Fair Director Tina Ziegler was enthusiastic about for the New York edition on the SOLD podcast.
Here are 5 highlights:
1: PLEASURE SEEKERS

A double dose of fun with complimentary work by Lithuanian illustrator Egle Zvirblyte and Spanish artist Jose Miguel Mendez. Bright colors and Coney-Island inspiration make this a happy, immersive booth right at the show's entrance.
2: MERES ONE "Keep the Lights On'

Jonathan 'Meres One' Cohen brings his light bulb icon to life in major way for the first time. Developed during his 'Keep the Lights On' campaign to save the historic Queens '5 Pointz' graffiti mecca, which he ran for many years. As the artist rightly says, "I don't do graffiti, I AM graffiti".
3: SKEWVILLE Local stand with Thinkspace

A really fun booth takeover by twin NYC brothers SKEWVILLE, named after their crooked house in the 90's. Works feature repurposed street signs, tin lunch boxes and their iconic boom box brought to life in mixed media.
4: HERA solo show with Vertical Gallery

An immersive, custom space by Pakistani/German artist Jasmin Siddiqui, aka HERA. Half of the influential duo HERAKUT, she painted walls on all sides with her distinctive handwriting and female figures. I visited this one multiple times!
5: HEBRU BRANTLEY Lil Mama and Flyboys

Striking, heroic figures from Chicago's Hebru Brantley in 3D and on canvas. A solo show, also with Vertical Gallery, Hebru's work is playfully optimistic and speaks to the possibilities of youth.
As you can see there's lots of inspiring work to experience. Go enjoy the show!
