(NEW YORK, NY – May 25, 2018) – Richmond Hood Company (RHC) has organized a community-based initiative to install 2 new large-scale murals on the walls of Staten Island's famous Artist Alley, a thriving commercial corridor located outside the company headquarters at 827 Castleton Avenue in West Brighton. Made possible in part through a DCA Premier Grant from Staten Island Arts, and public funding from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, the project is part of a larger effort to integrate public art into Staten Island's community space, while fostering youth empowerment and celebrating the borough's unique island culture.
Led by Jeremy Nieves, Cody Prez, and Tariq Zaid, each mural installation will be completed over the course of one month. The first mural titled "Climate Change Ain't Nothing To Mess With" draws its inspiration from growing concerns about global warming and its hazardous impact on the earth. The piece also gives a playful nod to native Staten Islanders The Wu Tang Clan, who have given their heartfelt blessing to the initiative. Designed by Cody Prez, the mural depicts a weather forecast map overtaken by a fiery Wu Tang-shaped satellite image, implicating the lethal threat climate change poses to humanity and our planet's future.
The mural unveiling ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, June 30th at 12pm, with a full day of festivities TBA.
There will be an unveiling ceremony and day-long celebration at the Richmond Hood Company HQ on Saturday, June 30th at 12pm, FREE and open to all!
Below is the full list of the contributing artists involved with our murals for #ArtistAlleySI co-curated by Kwue Molly, as well as the 2 big murals being backed by the city. Altogether, they'll be creating approximately 8000 square feet of public art!
