The Good, The Bad & THE DIRTY solo exhibition by Brian M. Viveros
Opening Reception: November 3rd, 6 - 8pm On view: November 3rd - 24th, 2018
Spoke NYC is pleased to present The Good, The Bad & THE DIRTY, a solo exhibition by Brian M. Viveros. The Good, The Bad & THE DIRTY will be Viveros’ inaugural solo exhibition at Spoke Art, in which he will be exhibiting paintings, detailed drawings, sketches, one-off hand embellished prints and more. The feminine figures Viveros conjures in his new body of work exude a combination of beauty, brawn and refusal, symbolizing the inviolable strength and power of the survivor.
The Good, The Bad & THE DIRTY highlights characters from Viveros’ fictitious DirtyLand, an alternate universe filled with strong irreverent female warriors, relishing in post-victory rule. These survivors are depicted wearing Viveros’ signature helmets and headgear, which are inspired by interests from the artists childhood such as Lucha Libre, Dia de los Muertos and military organizations. In what is Viveros’ most accomplished and personally inflected body of work to date, the artist has infused new characters, energy and life, into Dirtyland evolving to meet its next iteration with new strength, power and courage.
About the exhibition, Viveros states, “it’s been some time since I’ve had a show in New York, but I’m very excited to be returning with a full exhibition and new set of work for all my east coast fans! This set is very personal to me; it’s been a hell of a year with the loss of loved ones and the cancer demon. This energy charges the work, and I’ve pushed the strength and endurance in each piece as a result. I hope you can all make it out to this event - it’s free and open to the public and everyone’s invited, bring the tequila, bring the familia! I’ll be there all night long, drinking and hanging out. I look forward to meeting you all; it always means so much to me. I’m very grateful and excited about this exhibition with Spoke Art so save the date and spread the word, I’m bringing The Good, The Bad & THE DIRTY to NYC November 3rd!”
Please join us Saturday, November 3rd from 6 - 8pm for the opening reception of The Good, The Bad & THE DIRTY. The artist will be in attendance. A limited edition archival pigment print of Co-Pilot is scheduled to be released in conjunction with the exhibition and will be available in person at the opening. ______________________________________________________________________________ WHAT : Brian M. ABOUT THE ARTIST California artist Brian M. Viveros has an unmistakably arresting hand. His highly detailed paintings of defiant doe-eyed beauties summon a raw poetic of intractability. Beautiful and yet barbarous, they draw from the power of the feminine and its reconciliation of vulnerability, beauty, and power. These hyperreal portraits deliver cult worthy heroines emerging triumphant from battle. Viveros’ work elevates the iconography of the femme-fatale as a powerful emblem of STRENGTH and POWER: insubordinate beauties undaunted by the unruliness of a messy fight. The artist’s recognition and exposure was catalyzed by his participation in a major group exhibition in Switzerland in 1997, in which he exhibited alongside celebrated artist and academy award winner H.R. Giger. Since then, Viveros’ work has been widely exhibited in North America and Europe, extensively published in print, and showcased in numerous international art fairs around the world. In addition to his painting,Viveros has extended his practice to include making underground surreal films.
This world that Viveros has created over the past 15 years has evolved into a universe unto itself. Its protagonists are ruthlessly strong, its imaginary is adamant and unwavering, and its women are kickass, unapologetic champions. Welcome to the DirtyLand! ______________________________________________________________________________
