Hashimoto Contemporary: Kelly Tunstall + Ferris Plock

Kelly Tunstall + Ferris Plock:

AMONGST FRIENDS

February 2nd - February 23rd, 2019

NEW YORK CITY - Hashimoto Contemporary is pleased to present Amongst Friends, a two artist exhibition by San Francisco, CA based couple Kelly Tunstall and Ferris Plock, also known as the artist collective KeFe. Amongst Friends will be the artists inaugural solo exhibition at Hashimoto Contemporary, in which they explore the wide range of interactions which can be found within various types of group dynamics and pairs. From a Beavis and Butthead samurai battle to nymph like figures scooting along towards an unknown adventure, the works in Amongst Friends explores these themes while staying true to the artists’ signature styles and fantastical universes their figures inhabit.

With established independent practices of their own, Kelly Tunstall and Ferris Plock have been working collaboratively for over ten years. For Amongst Friends, the artists will be exhibiting over 20 new works, with a mix of collaborative and solo works by both artists. Pattern, candy colored palettes and a harmonizing of angular lines with fluid figures are prevalent in KeFe’s charming, detailed and richly stylized world.

As interpersonal relationships become more and more abstract due to the heavy use of social media and technology as a primary means of communication, Tunstall and Plock’s latest body of work focuses on immortalizing scenes from their alternate universe, exploring the bonds formed within the lives of these delightfully whimsical figures.

Please join us Saturday, February 2nd from 6pm - 8pm for the opening reception of Amongst Friends. The artists will be in attendance. A limited edition archival pigment print of Are You Threatening Me by Ferris Plock and Scoot by Kelly Tunstall (both pictured) are scheduled to be released in conjunction with the exhibition and will be available in person at the opening.

The exhibition will be on view through Saturday, February 23rd. For more information, additional images, or exclusive content, please email us at nyc@hashimotocontemporary.com

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

The experimental yet classically grounded work of Ferris Plock and Kelly Tunstall lives comfortably in a space between graphic expression, stylized representation, surrealism, and sketch. The binary contrast of masculine and feminine as the major theme in their work is also a very real and personal visual conversation between their imagined realities. Tunstall’s studied portraits render stylized female figures, as well as their pets, prey, powers, and dreams. Their physical forms and their relationship with each other represent and mirror internal thought processes and turmoil. In contrast, Plock’s work centers on the inner animalistic tendencies reflected in humans throughout the context of modern life. The prominent theme of anachronism in his work features creatures in all walks of life coming together to aid each other. Tunstall and Plock have both shown individually, as well as collaboratively, on a national and international scale. They are also professional animators, illustrators and designers. The pair are based in San Francisco with their sons, Brixton and Gus.
