Art Walk: ILO100 Murals Overlooking the UN

#ILO100 ART WALK

A UNIQUE ART DIPLOMACY EXPERIENCE!

NEW YORK United Nations - March 25th, 2018 - This spring, the International Labour Organization (ILO) is partnering with Street Art for Mankind (SAM) to produce beautiful and inspiring murals about social justice around the United Nations Headquarters. These #ILO100Murals, created by prominent international street artists, will set the course for a contemporary Art Walk, in the streets of Midtown Manhattan. They will capture key themes of the ILO’s efforts to ensure “decent work” for all, and inspire each one of us to create a better “future of work”.

The #ILO100Murals were created to commemorate a historic moment: the 100 years of the ILO. The ILO was established in 1919, after the First World War, on the understanding that universal and lasting peace would not be achieved without social justice. 100 years later, it is time to reflect on the progress made and think about the future of work that we want to build. Public art has been chosen as a powerful way in 2019 to engage society on this key challenge.

Five murals will be created from April 1st to April 8th to highlight the following themes: green jobs, youth employment, gender equality at work, child labor and forced labor and the future of work. The murals will all be painted by a diverse group of world-renowned international street artists, representing 10 nationalities and styles: Clandestinos (Shalak Attack and Bruno Smoky), Faith 47, Jorge Gerada, Mr Cenz and Victor Ash. Visitors will also be able to experience a guided audio tour of the murals through the Street Art for Mankind “Behind the Wall” app, which can be downloaded for free.

The Art Walk to inaugurate the #ILO100 Murals will take place on April 9th from 1-3 pm, and it will be open to the public. Visitors will be able to learn more about what is at stake for the future of work and hear the diplomats and the artists that made this project possible. The walk will start on 209 E 48th street and end at the Westin Hotel, on 212 E 42nd street. Expect a truly unique art diplomacy experience!

The #ILO100 Art Walk project is made possible thanks to the support from the International Labour Organization, as well as the Permanent missions of India and Uganda to the United Nations, Delta Air Lines, The Westin Grand Central, Navillus Contracting, Durante Rentals and PTC.
